School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences
We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Sports Performance Science to play a key role in developing further our international research and education profile in applying sports science to enhance athletic performance.
Sport and Exercise Science had a successful inaugural submission to the HEFCE Research Excellence Framework 2014, where we were ranked in the top 20% nationally for research intensity. Successful applicants will be expected to make a significant contribution to the delivery and underpinning research of our new BSc. Sports and Performance and Coaching degree (first intake October 2016).
Sports and Exercise Science has two research groups: SPF (Sports Performance & Fatigue) and HEAL (Health Exercise and Active Lifestyle). These groups have international expertise in pacing and competitive performance in middle-distance and endurance sports, training physiology, gait biomechanics, biomedical optics, disability & Paralympic sport, performance enhancing drugs, social support, green exercise, paediatric exercise science, cardiovascular health and rehabilitation. The successful candidate will be expected to make a major contribution to the SPF research group and contribute to the work of our Human Performance Unit (HPU). The HPU provides assessment and monitoring as well as advice on training and nutrition to athletes from the local community and from within the University, including several of Olympic standard.
The University is investing in new infrastructure in performance and coaching and has developed national excellence in our focus sports of basketball and volleyball. The new sports centre, opening 2017/18, incorporates multiple fixed and mobile HD cameras for analysing sports performance. There are also opportunities to build on existing collaborations within the University's research community. These include: Centre for Brain Science; School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering; School of Health and Human Sciences; and the Institute for Social and Economic Research.
The duties of the post will include conducting high quality research, supervising post graduate students, obtaining research funding, delivering and developing the BSc. in Sports Performance and Coaching and supporting the work of the Human Performance Unit and the university's focus sports programme.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and have a track record of international research in Sports Performance Science. Candidates with expertise in use and application of sports psychology or performance analysis are particularly encouraged to apply.
We particularly welcome applications from those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences.
