Department
The University of Essex delivers a transformational education to our students and puts their success at the heart of our mission, supporting every student from every background to achieve outstanding outcomes, and nurturing our community of educators to support and promote student success.
The Academic Section is the guardian of the student
experience and leads, promotes and embeds the institutional commitment to putting students at the heart of everything we do. It plays a central role in delivering the University’s commitment to excellence in education and research across the University. We are committed to innovation and continuous enhancement within our services and to working collaboratively across all areas of the University, and beyond, for the benefit of our students.
The Student Development team provides an integrated approach towards student skills development, through the innovative and engaging delivery of employability and careers services, academic skills support and student engagement expertise, to ensure that every Essex student has the skills and experiences necessary to succeed in securing a good degree outcome and a successful graduate employment outcome.
Duties of the Role
Reporting to the Head of Student Development, this Student Development Manager (Industry Engagement and Placements) role is an important management position which will lead an established area within the Student Development team. The post holder will play a key role in delivering transformational opportunities for students and improving graduate prospects and outcomes through overseeing and delivering strategy, policy and processes linked to all placement and work based learning activities as well as the development, direction and delivery of the Employer Engagement Strategy. The post holder will also need to work closely with a number of stakeholders to increase the range and quality of work experience for students as well as sourcing and cultivating industry links to create placements and internships opportunities.
Skills and qualifications required
With experience of successful innovation in the field of careers and employability in an educational environment, the successful candidate will provide leadership and have accountability for the enhancement in quality of the Industry Engagement and Placement services, ensuring that they respond to evolving student needs, whilst protecting service profile and maximising student engagement.
With a focus on continuous improvement, they will be able to demonstrate commitment to understanding and supporting the delivery of a holistic, outstanding and distinctive student experience.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience of leadership at a senior level including the development, implementation and impact of plans within a similar role based around development of work based learning opportunities and employer engagement. With the ability to manage at strategic level, they will be able to lead the development of proactive services, translate vision into operational objectives and take responsibility for and resolve complex matters.
At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.
To support this commitment we have our
Global Forum
, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based
Faith Centre
, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
