The School of Health and Social Care

Our academic members of staff (approx. 90) include social workers, nurses, allied health care professionals, psychologists and sociologists. In 2017 we were awarded a silver Athena SWAN award.
The Centre for Social Work and Social Justice
The Centre for Social Work and Social Justice aims at becoming a world leading hub for social work education, where active research feeds directly into the training of the new generation of social workers. Our vision is to develop a coherent and distinct identity which builds upon the strengths of existing staff, responds to the broader challenges facing social work and society, and embraces the University principle of "challenging conventions". We place a particular emphasis on critical theory, service user involvement, human rights and social justice.
The Role and Duties
You will undertake a teaching and organisational role on the BA Social Work and will contribute towards the development of a MA Social Work and Human Rights. You will conduct high quality research and contribute to the School's research profile.
Other duties will include supporting students as a personal tutor both in university and placement settings; developing and submitting high quality grant proposals and funding applications; and carrying out a range of administrative tasks within the department, including a lead role in recruiting to the Centre's programmes.
Two posts are available; a part-time 18 hours per week and a full time with a notional minimum of 36 hours a week. Both posts are permanent and are available to start from the 1st August 2018.
Qualifications and Skills required
Candidates are expected to hold a Master's degree and a PhD in social work or a relevant subject area (or be in the final stages of completion of their PhD). HCPC registration and social work practice experience are advantageous but not essential.
Experience is expected in relevant research activity with an emerging record of publications, or robust evidence that this will develop and a clear publications plan for submission to REF 2021. You will be required to demonstrate evidence of a coherent and fertile research agenda and have experience in relevant teaching, (preferably with a focus on critical theory, service user involvement, human rights and social justice).We particularly welcome applications from those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the School of Health and Social Care.At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do.
