IT ServicesIT Services, delivering outstanding IT and enabling excellence in its use, provides the supporting and enabling IT for the whole University across three campuses, from underlying network infrastructure to digital skills training for staff and students. The IT Services vision is of a University where students and staff are actively supported in their endeavours to excel in creating, managing, communicating, and exploiting information by using information technology facilities and services that are user-centred, flexible, accessible, and resilient.
IT Services, a section of around 80+ staff, is organised in three main operational service groups Client Services, Corporate Information Systems and Infrastructure. The Infrastructure Group comprises about 19 staff currently organised in three teams - Information Assurance, Networks and Telecoms, and Systems and Lab Support. The Group is responsible for the delivery of infrastructure and related central services at all three University campuses and beyond.
Duties of the RoleThe University of Essex is seeking an Assistant Director of IT Services (Infrastructure) to oversee the professional operation of the University's IT infrastructure and related services and to lead the successful introduction of improvements through specific projects and ongoing incremental improvement. As a member of the IT Services senior management team, you will have a key role in contributing to the University's Information Strategy, IT Services plans and roadmaps, and the role of digital in the University's next strategic plan.
Responsibilities will come under 4 key categories; 'Strategy, Policy and Planning', 'Communication and Collaboration', 'Service Leadership and Improvement' and 'Service Delivery and Value'. The post-holder will also be expected to lead or take a key role in a number of University IT projects that are already underway or in the project pipeline.

The role is based in Colchester but some travel to other campuses in Southend and Loughton will be required.
Qualifications and Skills requiredThe successful candidate will hold an honours degree or equivalent level qualification/ experience and relevant service management certification.
With extensive management experience at senior levels of IT infrastructure and a motivational leadership style, they will have a track record of successfully building and leading teams to deliver a wide range of infrastructure projects and improvements. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills will underpin a high attention to detail and the ability to manage complex workloads. With comprehensive organisational, administrative and IT skills, they will be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and considerately with stakeholders and customers at all levels and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team. They will be experienced in developing and implementing information/ cyber security in medium to large organisations, preferably in Higher Education.
