DepartmentThe Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project, based at the University of Essex's Human Rights Centre, analyses the challenges and opportunities presented by the use of big data, smart technology and artificial intelligence from a human rights perspective. Drawing on the wide range of expertise of its interdisciplinary researchers and partner organisations, the Project considers whether fundamental human rights concepts and approaches need to be adapted to meet the rapidly evolving technological landscape. The work also brings together States, international organisations, NGOs and academics to assess existing regulatory responses and whether reforms are needed in order to maximise effective human rights protection.
The Project, currently in its third year, is a GBP 6 million Economic and Social Research Council and University of Essex-funded project that brings together over 30 researchers from numerous disciplines. This interdisciplinary team is working on academic research aimed at generating cutting edge policy and practical developments at the national and international levels, focusing specifically on achieving impact within the United Nations space.
Duties of the RoleThe successful candidate will work on a number of issues and defined projects on the impacts of big data, smart technology and artificial intelligence on human rights. The post-holder will be based in the team focusing on identifying the human rights impacts of new and emerging technologies, the implementation of international human rights standards and norms, and the development of regulatory models in response to the risks identified. The post will also provide support to the teams working on surveillance, health and human rights, and the use of social media to document human rights violations and enhance humanitarian responses, where needed. The role will include undertaking research, producing a range of research outputs in a variety of formats, including blogs and journal articles and engaging with key stakeholders. You will also be required to contribute to applications for external research funding.
Skills and qualifications requiredThe successful candidate will have a degree in law (or related discipline) as well as a postgraduate qualification in a field relevant to human rights and may have a PhD or equivalent involving work relevant to human rights. Engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile is essential along with a developing record of producing reports, papers, briefings and other outputs. Knowledge of the human rights law system and experience of organising events and conferences are essential to the role.
