Essex Business School
The Finance Group at Essex Business School has an international reputation for their leading edge research. The School itself was ranked 20th in UK for research power in business and management in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. 100% of our business and management research environment was rated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
The Group is now looking to strengthen and expand its teaching and research activities and seeks to make appointments at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level within all areas of Finance, although there is a particular interest in candidates with a research focus on Asset Pricing and Market Microstructure. Please state clearly on your application the position to which you are applying.
Duties of the Role
This appointment will enhance the educational and research profile of Essex Business School as one of the premier business schools in the UK.
You will contribute to the development of the Group and School through research and teaching in Finance and related subject area. This new post will strengthen yet further the recruitment of high-quality students, the experience of students on undergraduate and master’s programmes, and students’ employment prospects. The appointment will strengthen the Group’s and School’s research reputations by publishing excellent, impactful research and by gaining research income from external funders.
Applicants at Lecturer level will contribute to excellence in education by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support; supervise student projects, fieldwork and placements; produce research outputs for publication at acceptable levels of volume and academic excellence; and undertake peer mentoring of colleagues on the request of the Dean.
Applicants at Senior Lecturer level will be expected to engage in curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision at both an individual and a strategic level; provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the Group; and undertake a senior leadership role within the department when required. The successful candidate will also help to mentor other colleagues to help them to improve their published work, research bids, and education that they provide to our students.
At both levels you will be expected to engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity (resulting in internationally excellent publications) that is in keeping with REF criteria; and generate significant external research income, appropriate to career stage and subject area norms.
A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the respective job packs.
Qualifications and Skills required
Applicants should hold a relevant doctoral level research degree (or be close to completing if applying at Lecturer level).
Applicants at Lecturer level should have evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile, with a clear publication plan for submission to future REF programmes. In addition, it is essential to have proven experience in teaching well at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to achieve this.
Applicants at Senior Lecturer level should have evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a strong research profile, with a clear publication plan for submission to future REF assessments. Proven experience in teaching well at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels is also essential. You will have experience of successfully mentoring other colleagues.
Ideally, you will have experience of generating income to support research and/or knowledge exchange appropriate to your career stage and discipline norms (this is essential if applying at Senior Lecturer level).
In both cases, you should have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in order to be able to disseminate knowledge and research to the wider academic community.
