Lecturer in Sports Performance and Coaching
Job description
We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Sports Performance and Coaching to play a key role in developing further our international research and education profile in these areas. Applicants must hold a doctoral qualification and have a track record of relevant research.
The post will be based in the Centre for Sports and Exercise Science. The Centre had a successful
inaugural submission to the HEFCE Research Excellence Framework 2014, where we were ranked in the top 20% nationally for research intensity. We currently run successful BSc. Degrees in Sports and Exercise Science and Sports Therapy. A new BSc. in Sports Performance and Coaching enrolled its first students in 2016/2017. The applicant will play an important role in delivering this new degree and developing the underpinning research in this area.
We have two research groups: SPF (Sports Performance & Fatigue) and HEAL (Health Exercise and Active Lifestyle). These groups have international expertise in pacing, biomedical optics, disability & Paralympic sport, performance enhancing drugs, social support, green exercise, paediatric exercise science, cardiovascular health and rehabilitation. We also run a Human Performance Unit (HPU), testing and advising athletes from the local community and the university, including several of Olympic standard. The successful candidate will be expected to make a major contribution to the environment in the SPF research group and contribute to the work of the HPU.
The Centre for Sports and Exercise Science is part of a broad based School of Biological Sciences providing access to modern molecular and physiological research facilities. Opportunities exist to build on our existing collaborations with the wider University community. These include: Institute for Social and Economic Research; the Centre for Brain Science; School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering; and the School of Health and Human Sciences. The university is also investing in new infrastructure in performance and coaching and has developed national excellence in the focus sports of basketball and volleyball. A new sports centre, opening 2017/18, will include multiple fixed and mobile HD cameras for analysing sports performance.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
