Senior Developer, UK Data Archive
Job description
UK Data Archive
The UK Data Archive holds the UK's largest collection of digital research data in the Social Sciences and Humanities, including major UK government-sponsored surveys, cross-national surveys, longitudinal studies and UK census data.
The UK Data Service has received multi-million-pound funding to design, implement and deliver a Smart
Meter Research Portal (SMRP) for enabling next generation research into household energy consumption. This infrastructure will be delivered on a Hadoop big data platform using innovative and leading-edge data technologies like Apache Spark and ElasticSearch.
Duties of the Role
We need a Senior Developer proficient in Java to join a dedicated and friendly Research and Innovation team assembling, testing and implementing the building blocks of this platform to go into production at the end of 2019, a platform that will enable researchers to generate unprecedented insights into both energy and social sciences data. This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on experience in a big data environment that is delivering a real project in the next two years.
Duties will include designing, creating, testing and documenting new or amended software, exploring opportunities for service and business improvement to SMRP and maintaining and supporting SMRP services.
Skills and Qualifications required
The successful candidate will hold an Undergraduate or first degree in a computer-related or data-related discipline. You will also have at least two years' experience of developing application code in a production environment with Java/Scala in a Linux environment.
Candidates will have a proven track record of coding and have experience handling XML and/ or JSON data structures. In addition, prioritisation skills, excellent attention to detail, familiarity with Linux based software, good written and verbal communication skills in English and an ability to work independently are required skills and abilities.
Whilst you may have experience working on a Hadoop environment, it's more important that you have the right aptitude and mind set for championing disruptive tech and delivering it to customers. You will be ready to be at the heart of a game-changing project with a national profile.
This post involves access to Government systems, information or data and will be subject to the staff vetting process. Further information can found in the Job Pack.
The post is full-time and fixed term until 31 May 2022. The post is fixed term due to the delivery of a specific project.
We particularly welcome applications from those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the UK Data Service. When applying, candidates are encouraged to describe how they meet each of the essential requirements.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
Please see the further detail link below for a full job description and person specification which outlines the full duties, skills, qualifications and experience needed for this role plus more information relating to the post.
