The School of Biological Sciences
The School of Biological Sciences is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in the area of Ecology/Environmental Biology. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to teaching, conduct independent research and obtain research funding. The School is in the middle of a period of sustained expansion and consists of ca.1000 staff and students. Our 45 academics are divided into four research groups that provide the technical support, infrastructure, intellectual engagement and collaboration to underpin the School's research success. Our multidisciplinary research environment is central to our commitment to excellence in research-led teaching. Curriculum development is informed by our research, ensuring a relevant, modern, dynamic and highly-rated learning experience for our undergraduate and postgraduate students. The postholder will be a member of the Ecology and Environmental Microbiology Group which focuses on broad themes of biodiversity, climate and environmental change, biogeochemical cycling and environmental biotechnology, across all levels of biological organisation (from genes to ecosystems) and across all taxonomic groups (from microbes to macro-organisms). The Group is always well-funded with sponsors including NERC, BBSRC, STFC, EU FP7/H2020, Government Agencies, Earthwatch, charities and industry. The School is part of a NERC DTP and through a supportive and colligate approach to grant submission, currently exempt from NERC demand management.
Duties of the Role
The postholder will be required to conduct internationally excellent research and demonstrate this through publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals and other outlets. The post-holder will be expected to develop and execute a strategy for raising research income to sustain an active, internationally competitive research programme. This should be in the context of developing a network of national and international collaborations. As part of the School's research-led teaching ethos, the postholder will be expected to develop innovative learning materials, teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise PhD students in the areas of ecology, freshwater biology and marine biology. The School puts a high value on collegiality that helps to foster the smooth running of our academic community. Therefore, the postholder should expect to be assigned administrative duties from time to time.Appointment will be made as Lecturer.Skills and qualifications required
The postholder will have a relevant doctoral level research degree and a demonstrable track record of research at postdoctoral level in an aspect of ecology aligned to the Ecology and Environmental Microbiology research group's core themes. Applicants will be required to demonstrate how their experience complements and extends the relevant research in the School and provide evidence of successful collaborative research with colleagues in their home institution and a network of researchers nationally and/or internationally. The postholder must be an excellent communicator and be able to explain their research to diverse audiences. They should have the necessary interpersonal skills that will allow effective interaction with their colleagues, our students and the general public.
