School of Biological Sciences
The School of Biological Sciences is large and diverse and provides a vibrant research and teaching environment with a strong collegiate culture. We have a global reputation for our research: two-thirds of our research was rated as 'world leading' or 'international excellent' in REF 2014. We conduct research in four main areas
comprising: Genomics and Computational Biology; Ecology and Environmental Microbiology; Protein Structure and Disease Mechanisms; Plant Productivity. Our infrastructure and facilities match our ambitions to carry out excellent research.
The School of Biological Sciences comprises in the region of 900 students supported by over 100 academic, research and support staff. We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Genetics, and Marine Biology. We champion research-led education, where teaching is informed by our research and students develop analytical, laboratory and field based skills. Our aim is to provide a challenging and rewarding environment for both our students and staff.
Duties of the Role
The School is currently seeking to appoint two fixed-term Laboratory Technicians (one full-time and one part-time).
Duties will include working as part of a team that includes other technicians, students and researchers in undertaking research and teaching in the appropriate subject areas; undertaking risk assessments, keep health and safety records up to date, and providing written documentation of methods and procedures employed in designated working areas; assisting in the collection and collation of experimental data including analytical work using established laboratory methods, data entry and data reporting; setting up and maintaining specialist equipment, including calibration, trouble shooting, routine maintenance and arranging any necessary repairs; developing or improving the methods and procedures employed, including working as part of a team in developing specialist (in house) equipment. Additional duties will include ensuring the smooth day-to-day working of designated areas including organising the purchase of supplies, supervising the use of laboratory space and laboratory facilities.
Skills and qualifications required
The role holder will hold an appropriate qualification in Biological or Chemical Sciences relevant to the post applied for. They will have relevant experience in a laboratory research environment and knowledge of the subject area that is relevant to the post applied for. They should be experienced in a range of laboratory methods and proficient in the use of equipment and in the use/development of laboratory analytical techniques. Excellent IT skills are essential to this post.
