UK Data ArchiveThe UK Data Service, based at the University of Essex, has received multi-million pound funding to design, implement and deliver a Smart Meter Research Portal for enabling next generation research into household energy consumption.
This infrastructure will be delivered on a big data platform using innovative and leading edge data technologies like Apache Spark and ElasticSearch and will enable researchers to uncover deep insights into both energy and social sciences data.
The Role and DutiesThe Research and Innovation team requires a Data Engineer to join a dedicated development team to provide insight and guidance into data flows, machine learning, data modelling and analytics.
The post-holder will be responsible for implementing data flows to connect operational systems; documenting source-to-target mappings; re-engineering manual data flows; supporting the build of data streaming functionality; writing ETL scripts and code; and designing and developing business intelligence reports and solutions.
Qualifications and Skills requiredThe successful candidate will hold an undergraduate or first degree in a computer-related or data-related discipline.
Above all, you will have a passion for data and for championing disruptive tech to deliver it to researchers. You will be unafraid of challenging received wisdom and ready to be at the heart of a game-changing project with a national profile.
Exceptional attention to detail; the ability to produce high quality work within deadlines; and IT skills with a familiarity of Linus based software are all essential for the post.
This post involves access to Government systems, information or data and will be subject to the staff vetting process. The UK Data Archive is ISO 27001, certified for Information Security Management.

The post is full-time and fixed-term until 30 March 2021. The post is fixed-term due to the nature of the funding.
