Fixed-term Teacher of Economics, Department of Economics
Job description
Department of Economics
The Department of Economics is home to world-leading research, pioneering new solutions to global issues, which inform our undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Our rankings speak for themselves. We are 5th in the UK for
research excellence
(
REF 2014
) and among the only eight UK departments ranked among the top 150 economics departments
in the world according to the
QS World University Rankings
. The University of Essex is located 60 miles northeast of London. For more information about the department and its programs visit:
www.essex.ac.uk/economics
We are home to students and staff from all over the world who have a strong sense of belonging and want to think, learn and achieve together and influence and improve the world - for themselves and others.
The Department is seeking to make a number of fixed-term appointments to cover a short-term need.
Duties of the Role
This post will involve a varied remit, to include scoping for some future activities with external partner organisations and possible future academic programmes, alongside more standard duties such as giving student feedback on examinations and projects, contacting applicants as part of conversion activities, and STATA support for student projects undertaken in the summer. The post holder will attend relevant meetings, briefings and standardisation sessions etc., as and when required, and will liaise with Module Leaders, Course Directors and administrators as necessary. The person appointed may also be required to support administrative staff on any student-related issues and support graduation activities as necessary.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate should have a PhD in a relevant discipline (or be close to completion of studies) or equivalent qualification and will have experience of teaching and/or tutoring in a relevant discipline, ideally in a Higher Education environment. In addition, an understanding of a range of different teaching methodologies and how to apply them to facilitate an effective learning environment for students, is essential for this role.
You will be committed to developing your teaching practice, and will have a reflective approach to your teaching. Good knowledge of Economics and experience of teaching in a variety of modes (lectures, seminars, and tutorials) would be an advantage as would experience of marking undergraduate coursework and examinations.
The post holder should also have the ability to adapt their teaching to the needs of students for whom English is not their first language. You should have a working knowledge of Microsoft packages, excellent communication skills in English, have a flexible and adaptable teaching and feedback style and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. STATA knowledge is highly desirable.
These are fixed-term posts, available on either a full-time or part-time basis, until 31 July 2019 in the first instance. Please see the General Information section of the job pack for further details. Applications are invited from all fields.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
