The Department of Government at the University of Essex invites applications for a one year Senior Research Officer post working on incidental versus strategic violence and the effects of violence on individual participation. This post is financed as part of a Grant from the European Research Council for a project on "Conflict, Strategies, and Violence: An Actor-based Approach to Violent and Non-Violent Interactions" (313373) led by Professor Kristian Skrede Gleditsch. This project analyses conflict in terms of incompatibilities between actors, beyond the use of violence, and examines how the structure of the incompatibilities and the actors' strategies and interactions determine whether we see escalation to violence, the use of non-violent direct action, and specific alternative outcomes, such as accommodation or regime change. An extended proposal summary is provided below as well as on the project home page: http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/-ksg/ksg_erc.html
Candidates with research interests directly related to the project as described are encouraged to apply. All applicants must submit an application letter summarizing the relevance of their research interests to the project and the core motivation. We particularly welcome applications from persons with projects related to the relationship between violence and non-violence, the difference between organized violence and disorganized individual violence (e.g. riots), as well as the potential negative and positive effects of dissident violence on mobilization. We also have a preference for candidates with a broader comparative perspective and general interests in conflict research and choice of strategies in conflict. Applications that primarily focus on individual case studies or primarily relate to normative aspects of non-violent direct action are unlikely to be competitive.
Candidates must hold a hold a PhD in Political Science or other relevant discipline, or be able to obtain prior to starting the post. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is desirable.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
