Human Rights Centre / School of LawThe Mental Health and Human Rights Project, based at the University of Essex's Human Rights Centre, will undertake research, publication and stakeholder engagement to enhance the capacity of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health in his landmark work on the right to mental health. This Project continues a three-year partnership with the Special Rapporteur, which will now have an explicit focus on mental health. This project builds on a growing body of work produced from the mandate on the right to mental health and seeks to establish a concrete legacy by the Special Rapporteur as he approaches the end of his mandate in 2020. The project will bring together States, international organizations, NGOs, mental health professionals, users and survivors of mental health services, and academics to support the thematic research of the mandate and fortify the existing discourse on the right to mental health in national, regional, and international fora. The post-holder will be part of a small Essex research team focused on a range of research, publication, and public engagement activities to promote project outputs. Duties of the RoleThe successful candidate will work on a number of cutting-edge issues and defined research projects related to the evolving right to mental health normative framework. The post-holder will focus on a range of research, public engagement, and other activities to support the mental health-related work of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health.Responsibilities will include engaging in individual and/ or collaborative research activity in internationally excellent publications that is in keeping with Research Excellence Framework (REF) criteria, producing a range of single and jointly authored research outputs and to provide substantive and organisational support and guidance as required.Skills and qualifications requiredThe successful candidate will have a degree in Law or a related discipline and it would be desirable to have a PhD or equivalent involving work relevant to human rights. Evidence of a developing research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile is essential along with a developing record of producing reports, papers, briefings and other outputs.
