Department of Language and Linguistics
The Department of Language and Linguistics (DLL) has 37 full-time academic members of staff and provides a broad spectrum of expertise in the study of language and in the practical teaching of modern foreign languages. Its core ambition is to offer students a transformative educational experience in these areas underpinned
by high quality research. The majority of research conducted in the department is rated 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent', placing us 8th among departments in the UK for research quality (REF 2014).
Our linguistics expertise covers Theoretical and Descriptive linguistics, Applied linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, TESOL and Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling. We offer a wide range of languages including French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese that can be taken at degree level from beginners to advanced levels following the Common European Languages Framework.
The Department is now seeking to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Chinese Translation and Interpreting (TI) on an ASE (Teaching only) contract.
Duties of the Role
The appointed candidate will be responsible for, directing and delivering postgraduate modules in Chinese-English, English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting on our MA Chinese TI and Diploma TI courses.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the supervision of MA students as well as the administration and management of the department.
In addition, the post-holder will actively contribute to the promotion and student recruitment of the MA by developing new partnerships and advertising our programmes to suitable universities in China and Taiwan.
There is an expectation to contribute to excellence in education, engage in individual and/or collaborative scholarship and professional practice activity, and to enhance the scholarly reputation of the Department and the University at this level.
A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Leadership and Citizenship and Scholarship and Professional Practice) can be found within the job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will have a relevant postgraduate qualification or doctoral level research degree in Translation or Interpreting or equivalent professional experience or practice and will have fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level.
You will have substantial experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways, along with a sustained engagement in continuing professional development in relevant subjects/disciplines and their pedagogies.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are essential for this post, along with proven ability to collaborate with colleagues on course development, curriculum changes and module delivery.
This is a permanent, full-time role, starting 1st July 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
