Innovation and Technology Solutions
Innovation and Technology Solutions, delivering outstanding IT and enabling excellence in its use, provides the supporting and enabling IT for the whole University across three campuses, from underlying network infrastructure to digital skills training for staff and students. Our vision is of a University where
students and staff are actively supported in their endeavours to excel in creating, managing, communicating, and exploiting information by using information technology facilities and services that are user-centred, flexible, accessible, and resilient.
Innovation and Technology Solutions, a section of about 100 staff, is organised in four main operational service groups - Client Services, Corporate Information Systems, Infrastructure, and Strategic Planning. The Infrastructure Group comprises about 19 staff currently organised in four teams - Information Assurance and Cyber Security, Networks and Telephony, Systems and Storage, and Directory and Cloud services. The Group is responsible for the delivery of infrastructure and related services at all three University campuses and beyond.
The University of Essex has over 10,000 network points, more than 4,500 telephone extensions and 650 WiFi access points across its three campuses.
Duties of the Role
The Network and Telephony team, based within the Innovation and Technology Solutions Infrastructure Group, delivers network and telecoms services and the associated technical leadership for our University. This includes the proactive support of teaching spaces, meeting areas, campus conferences, commercial events and major high-profile University events such as the annual Graduation, Registration and Clearing days.
The post holder will work within the Networks and Telephony team to support our University's mission. The scope of the job includes the configuration, deployment, monitoring, maintenance repair and de-commissioning of network and telecoms equipment. They will work in a team whose skills range in experience and breadth of knowledge and will participate in using their expertise to deliver University wide projects and events such as Graduation and the deployment of networks and telecoms equipment into new University buildings.

The post is based in the Innovation and Technology Solutions offices at the Colchester campus. Travel to other campuses at Southend and Loughton will be required on a regular basis.
Qualifications and Skills required
The post holder will possess a degree, equivalent professional qualifications, or equivalent experience and it is essential that you have experience of enterprise networking environments and an understanding of IP and Ethernet networking. With excellent communication, organisational, administrative and IT skills, the successful applicant will be equally able to work autonomously or as part of a team.
The successful applicant will have the ability to drive the delivery of new services and technologies while remaining resolutely customer focused, maintaining an excellent level of customer service and continually improving the customer experience.
The post holder will have the confidence to flag issues and to discuss solutions with the Networks Manager and Senior Technician (Telephony), as appropriate.
It is anticipated that the appointment will be made on a full-time basis, however we would welcome applications from individuals who would consider a part-time appointment from 0.5FTE upwards.
