The Department
The School of Philosophy and Art History at the University of Essex is pleased to invite applications for a permanent Lecturer in Philosophy.
Essex Philosophy (http://www.essex.ac.uk/philosophy/) is part of the School of Philosophy and Art History in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Essex - a community of academics who share a common project of researching and teaching art and ideas. We are internationally recognized for our unique combination of Anglo-American and European Philosophy - particularly in Critical Theory, German Idealism (including Kant), and Phenomenology. We also have a long-standing research orientation in Moral and Political Philosophy, and research strengths in the Philosophy of Psychiatry and the Medical Humanities. We are committed to fostering a variety of philosophical approaches, and to developing links between philosophy and other disciplines (including the Human Rights Centre at Essex and various interdisciplinary initiatives on big data). We offer a wide range of courses for undergraduates, taught postgraduates, and doctoral research students. We were rated fifth for research outputs and ninth overall in Philosophy in the UK in the last Research Assessment Exercise (REF2014; using raw GPA figures from the Times Higher Education).
The School offers a congenial environment for research and teaching, both of which are carried out with considerable emphasis on collegiality and collaboration. The School hosts two major research and knowledge exchange initiatives, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council of Great Britain and the Wellcome Trust. The Essex Autonomy Project (http://autonomy.essex.ac.uk/) is an investigation of the ideal of autonomy in human affairs. Ethics of Powerlessness: the theological virtues today (http://powerlessness.essex.ac.uk/) is a project about the kind of agency available to individuals faced with experiences of powerlessness (such as in end-of-life situations) and investigates the potential of the theological virtues (faith, hope, and love) to help us navigate powerlessness across religious and secular contexts. In the coming years, we also aim to develop School-wide research and knowledge exchange initiatives, combining Philosophy with Art History and Theory, particular at the intersection of Art and Politics. The Interdisciplinary Studies Centre (http://www.essex.ac.uk/cish/) is administered by the School, but other departments contribute to its degree courses, of which there are five: American Studies, European Studies, Global Studies, Liberal Arts, and Latin American Studies. We consistently receive excellent results in National Student Satisfaction surveys - for example, American Studies came first nationally in 2015 and 2016 with an overall satisfaction score of 100%.
