Institute for Social and Economic Research The Research Centre on Micro-Social Change, MiSoC, created in 1989, is one of the longest running ESRC-funded research centres in the UK. The ESRC awarded MiSoC 5 more years’ funding, beginning 1 October 2019. MiSoC is hosted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex, which was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2017 for its “authoritative social and economic research to inform the policies of governments for the improvement of people’s lives”. MiSoC is proud of its record of achieving impact on policy and practice, and the future success of MiSoC depends on continuing and enhancing this through the current funding period (until October 2024), and demonstrating this to funders, reviewers and stakeholders.
Duties of the RoleThis post provides a unique opportunity for an ambitious professional to leverage their existing knowledge and contacts while at the same time broadening their expertise and reach across different sectors. The main duties of the post will include:

Qualifications and Skills requiredThis role requires a higher degree in a social science discipline or equivalent experience in using or interpreting the findings of social science research.
The successful candidate will have an interest in UK social and economic issues and an understanding of UK policy-making processes and priorities, especially as within central government and Parliament. They will be able to demonstrate an awareness of local and national government policy in at least one area relevant to MiSoC’s research agenda (which would include higher education, social mobility, family policy, inequalities, active aging, migration, social cohesion), as well as a working understanding of the “impact agenda” in higher education.
This post is fully funded by the MiSoC Research Centre for a 24-month period and is offered on a part- or full-time basis (0.6 – 1 FTE). We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with the successful candidate and can agree the specific working pattern at the time of offer.
