We are a University where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn't just encouraged, it's expected. As a University ranked Gold and in the top 25% of the TEF, and the top 25% of the REF 2014 we are committed to two things: excellence in education and excellence in research. Our students are members of a unique, transformational living and learning experience which empowers them with the skills to make a difference to the world around them.
Organised health and social care is one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century, made possible by the vision and dedication of the professionals who staff it. We are at the forefront of preparing people to solve real-life issues in health and society, offering courses and research that both commissioners and employers believe in. We work in partnership with people from all walks of life, who offer us their expertise and experience, making us a team of people who truly understand what is needed from health and social care professionals and services - now and in the future.
The School has an excellent reputation for education and research. Our academic members of staff (approx. 90) include nurses, allied health care professionals, social workers, psychologists and sociologists. The School is based at Southend and Colchester. In 2017 we were awarded a silver Athena SWAN award which recognises the commitment the School has toward equality and development of an inclusive culture promoting dignity and respect. Nursing is ranked 6th in the Guardian University League Tables 2019.
We are seeking to appoint a Dean to lead the School at a very exciting time in our development. We therefore require an outstanding individual with a proven track record of successful academic leadership and management combined with experience of effective business planning and resource allocation. As the key ambassador for the University, exceptional networking skills underpinned by deep-seated experience of maximising the relationship between higher education, the NHS and a range of related agencies during a rapidly changing policy environment will be vital. Developing existing and new partnerships, for example with Public Health England which moves to Harlow in Essex in 2021 and developing new international partnerships will be key opportunities over the next five years. Building on the small number of staff who will be returned to REF 2021, the University is committed to building a research component to the work of the School so that a strong submission can be made to UOA 3 in REF 2026.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in a discipline relevant to the University, or have an equivalent level of experience, and have a distinguished academic record, including an internationally excellent research standing. The post is available to staff without a research component to their contract (ASE) and with a research component (ASER). ASE candidates will need to demonstrate the ability to lead the research vision for the School, linking research-led education and development of research themes For ASER applicants the candidates will need to publish in an area that allows the University to submit them to one of our Units of Assessment in REF 2021 and be publishing work at REF 3* level (quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour but which falls short of the highest standards of excellence). For staff with a research component to their contract, we recognise that research credibility is essential and a percentage of the post will be ring-fenced for research and we will provide research support as necessary.
We are home to the curious, brave and bold. If you share our passion and have the skills and experience we seek, we would be keen to hear from you.
