Department/RoleThe School of Biological Sciences is seeking to appoint a lecturer to enhance our existing research strength in our Ecology and Environmental Microbiology Group. This position is part of an initiative funded by the University to increase research intensity in Biological Sciences and to maintain the high quality of our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Candidates should have an enthusiasm for teaching, a track record of high quality research outputs and be able to demonstrate they have the ability to obtain grant support. We are particularly keen to attract candidates with a strong track record in the areas of -omics based approaches to ecological research (e.g. population genetics or genomics), ecological networks and species distribution modeling, or biodiversity-ecosystem services. The School of Biological Sciences provides a vibrant, multi-disciplinary research environment with access to core facilities supporting research in the areas of ecology and marine biology, bio-imaging, proteomics, as well as newly equipped molecular genetics and computational biology laboratories.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to teaching, conduct independent research and obtain research funding. Our School supports research groups, with technical expertise, infrastructure, intellectual engagement and collaboration in the areas of Marine and Freshwater Biology, Environmental Microbiology, and Genomics and Computational Biology. Our multidisciplinary research environment is central to our curriculum development and our commitment to excellence in research-led teaching, ensuring a relevant and highly rated learning experience for our undergraduate and postgraduate students. The post holder will be a member of the Ecology and Environmental Microbiology Group which focusses on four broad themes of biodiversity, climate and environmental change, biogeochemical cycling and environmental biotechnology across all levels of biological organisation (from genes to ecosystems) and across all taxonomic groups (from microbes to macro-organisms). The Group is always well-funded with sponsors including NERC, BBSRC, EU FP7/H2020, Earthwatch and industry and has recently moved into refurbished state-of-the-art laboratories.
Duties of the Post
The post holder will be required to conduct internationally excellent research and demonstrate this through publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals and other outlets. To sustain their research the post holder will be expected to develop and execute a strategy for raising research income commensurate with their sub-discipline norms. This should be in the context of developing a network of national and international collaborations. As part of the School's research-led teaching ethos, the post holder will be expected to develop innovative learning materials, teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise PhD students in the area of Marine Biology. The School places a high value on collegiality and the post holder will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of our education and research activities by taking on administrative duties as required.
Qualifications/Skills Required
The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and an excellent track record of research demonstrated by a publication and funding record commensurate with their stage of career. Applicants will be required to demonstrate how their experience complements and extends the relevant research in the School and will also be expected to provide evidence of belonging to a network of researchers at national or international levels. Excellent communication skills and an ability to explain their research to audiences ranging from peers to the general public are required together with the necessary interpersonal skills that will allow effective interaction with colleagues, our students and the general public.
