The School of Biological Sciences at the University of Essex is seeking to appoint an outstanding, highly motivated individual for the position of a postdoctoral research fellow to deliver on a high-profile BBSRC-funded project to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the assembly of multidrug efflux pumps (MDR pumps) in Gram-negative bacteria with the view of developing novel approaches to interfering with their function.
This is a fixed term appointment for 18 months (starting date 01/01/2018) working in the group of Dr Vassiliy Bavro within the centre for Molecular and Cellular Sciences (MCB), School of Biosciences, University of Essex (http://www.essex.ac.uk/bs/research/centres_and_groups/mcb/), however the project also involves close collaboration with groups at the Laurence Berkeley National Lab (USA) and Jacobs University, Bremen (Germany). As a result, the fellow will be expected to liaise with the collaborative partners and may have to be available to collect data and take part in activities in the partner labs in the later stages of the project.
Duties of the Role
The main duties of the post will include developing research objectives and proposals, generating primary research data through experimentation within the framework of the project, analysing and interpreting research findings, contributing to writing bids for research funding and presenting research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof and presenting at national and international conferences. The postholder will also supervise students on research-related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline. The postholder will also be expected to undertake management/administration arising from research as well as contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme of the project.
Qualifications and Skills required
Candidates should hold a PhD in molecular microbiology or relevant discipline. Previous post-doctoral research experience with a track record of good publications is essential.
The applicant should have solid experience in protein expression and purification, as well as significant experience in molecular biology. Experience in handling membrane proteins would be highly advantageous.
