At Essex University, we are committed to excellence in teaching and research, offering a transformational education to our students so that they can make the world a better place, and ensuring our research benefits individuals and communities. Our university is a community whose concern is not just with the pursuit of learning, but with the fulfilment of lives.
The University currently has 17,800 students at our campuses in Colchester, Southend and Loughton, a further 5,000 students based at our strategic partners and 1,000 academic staff. We are a UK top 10 university for research quality in four subjects and in the UK top 10 for research power in five subjects (Times Higher Education 2022). We have achieved a top 50% position for all perspectives in the Knowledge Exchange Framework second iteration. In 2018 we were awarded the accolade ‘University of the Year’ by the Times Higher Education.
We have invested £80 million in our 43-acre science and business park initiative on our Colchester Campus (Knowledge Gateway), in support of our mission to apply our research for the benefit of individuals and communities. This campus has been designated as a University Enterprise Zone by Research England and BEIS, one of only 14 in the UK.
Our university strategy sets out our ambition to be acknowledged nationally and internationally as a leading research-intensive university. By 2025 we want to have 20,000 students across our campuses and 1,000 researchers. We also want to be firmly in the top 25 of UK universities in the Times Good University Guide, all of our subjects in the top 20% of their discipline within the UK, and in the top 200 universities in the world.
We are now seeking a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) of Education to join our senior executive leadership team. The post holder will have responsibility for developing and implementing the University’s Strategic Plan and Education Strategy, which relates to both undergraduate and postgraduate education, and to the academic and the extra-curricular experience of the University’s students.
This individual will embed distinctive and effective approaches to research-led education and ensure the University’s portfolio of taught and research degree programmes is balanced, viable and intellectually challenging. This is a senior academic leadership post and reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor.
The appointee will hold a substantive post of Professor in a relevant academic department, which they will revert to at the conclusion of their term of office. The appointment term is three years, with eligibility for re-appointment for a further three years. Based at our Colchester Campus, with 20% of their time allocated to maintaining and developing their research career. The PVC will be research-active and submissible to the REF.
