The School of Health and Social CareThe School of Health and Social Care has an excellent reputation for teaching and research. Our academic members of staff include occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychological therapists, nurses, social workers, oral health practitioners and sociologists. The School is run over two campuses; Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.
The School has an excellent reputation for innovative educational delivery of a range of professional programmes in combination with an excellent research track record in social scientific approaches to the study of health, illness and wellbeing. The school offers a unique context for the development and application of novel approaches to the study of a range of health and social care contexts, all underpinned by a concern for understanding the wider social contexts in which health, illness and wellbeing are located. We aim for excellence in research and in education and are looking for candidates who can contribute to both.
The School is currently going through exciting changes and expansion, with an increase in student numbers, an intention to prepare for submission to Unit Assessment 3 (research focusing on Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF), and the introduction of new courses, including the new Speech and Language Therapy Apprenticeship, and Masters in Global Public Health. We are also expanding and building new and innovative areas for student study, including new clinical skills spaces specifically for our Speech and Language Therapy students, consultation rooms and study areas.
As part of this exciting expansion, we are now looking to make a number of appointments at Lecturer level. The areas of specialism we are particularly interested in attracting are phonetics, adult/acquired, dysphagia, motor speech, paediatric speech difficulties and LD.
Duties of the Role The School of Health and Social Care is seeking to appoint two full-time Lecturers (G8 ASE; G9 ASER) and one part-time (G8 ASE, G9 ASE) Lecturer in Speech & Language Therapy. The grade 9 ASE Lecturer will specialise in the area of phonetics.
The post includes a significant contribution to our Speech and Language Therapy courses at Colchester campus (these are run at UG and PG level). It is expected that you would assist the Head of Division, providing practical support to the team and undertake programme/ module leadership and teaching, and assessment duties. You may also have the opportunity to input into our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio, as well as into other courses offered across the School.
Your ongoing development is important to us, and you will have the opportunity to work closely with your Head of Division, the School’s Director of Staff Development and Wellbeing, and the Dean, to enhance your potential and achieve your aims.
For the ASE Grade 8 and 9 posts, duties will include engaging effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the Department, and developing a broad understanding of how such activities support student learning and design, plan and deliver learning in creative and innovative ways appropriate to the subject area and level.
For the ASER Grade 9 post, candidates are expected to engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity that is in keeping with REF criteria, generate external research funding, including in collaboration with colleagues, appropriate in scale to career stage and subject area norms and develop a research agenda.
All posts will require management, administration, supervision, and support for staff alongside, assessment and teaching of students on our existing modules, and generally enhancing our research-led teaching in Speech & Language Therapy.

Skills and qualifications required The successful candidate will hold a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD, have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate plus HCPC registration as a Speech & Language Therapist, or an equivalent EU/International registration.
It is essential that candidates also have a commitment to uphold the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and to exhibit professional behaviours and attitudes in keeping with the HCPC and NHS values. Along with having experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in engaging and innovative ways and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
At Grade 9 ASE level, it is essential to have experience in phoentics.
In addition, for the Grade 9 ASER post, candidates would be expected to be actively engaged in research and evidence a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.
