The establishment of the Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing (IPHW) is advancing the University’s mission of excellence in education and research, for the benefit of individuals and communities. The new Centre for Coastal Communities will be established under the IPHW and will be an international centre of excellence, bringing together research strengths across all three faculties, driving forward research collaborations and developing our strategic partnerships with national and regional organisations including NHS Trusts. The establishment of the Centre for Coastal Communities will align our research capability, expertise and strengths across a broad spectrum of research and innovations relating to Coastal Communities, including a wide range of health-related training programmes, clinics, facilities and services, leveraging the assets of our expertise and skills to enable us to scale our impact. The Centre for Coastal Communities will support the University’s vision to be recognised as a centre for excellence in research and education, at local, regional, national and international levels.

We are now seeking to appoint a Professor and Director of the Centre for Coastal Communities. Utilising our international reputation in social science and other disciplines and our researchers across science and health and humanities to successfully tackle the most complex issues in public health and wellbeing will be a key aim for the successful candidate.
You will be appointed to a substantive Chair (Professorship) in the School of Health and Social Care, to which you will revert at the conclusion of your term of office The initial term of appointment to the role of Director is three years, with eligibility for re-appointment for an additional three-year term thereafter. On completion of the secondment, you will return to the School of Health and Social Care, undertaking the normal range of education, research and leadership/citizenship duties. Throughout the secondment period 0.8 FTE of your time will be allocated to the Director role and 0.2.FTE allocated to your own research.
While we are looking to a broad range of expertise around public health, we are particularly interested to consider applications from candidates with a strong research and teaching track record in any of the following areas: health policies, health systems and health economics.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD in a discipline relevant to the University, or have an equivalent level of experience, and have a distinguished academic record, including an internationally excellent research standing. A proven track record of successful academic leadership at a senior level in a higher education institution that includes working with external partners and a track record of successfully leading on consultancy activities also essential.
