The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE)The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and dynamic department in the Faculty of Science and Health. The School is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students. We are rapidly growing due to increasing student numbers and now wish to appoint an exceptional individual at Professorial level in the area of Cyber Physical Systems to further develop our research and education expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates with research expertise in one or more of the following areas, if possible, with experience of deep learning methods: * Efficiency, functionality, reliability, usability, safety and security of CPS.* Assurance of privacy and data protection of the individuals and groups employing CPS devices / Cybersecurity of CPS. * Integration between computational and physical elements in CPS.* CPS interaction or control of robotic AI platforms (e.g. self-driving vehicles and autonomous robots, collision avoidance, robotics surgery, healthcare monitoring and robot surveillance in remote areas). * Novel architectures and design automation for CPS that take into account several factors such as available computational resources, multiple sensory inputs/outputs, communication mechanisms, development languages and maintenance for end-users.* Technology research in sensor integration and the design methodology needed to develop suitable energy efficient and high performance systems to enable advanced capability in robotics applications consummate with recently emerging technologies such as deep learning based computer vison. Both Robotics and Embedded Systems research at Essex have an outstanding reputation, signified for example by the recent award of the GBP 42M EPSRC National Centre in Nuclear Robotics to CSEE. The role is specifically suited but not limited to candidates that can complement the existing major research areas in Embedded Systems and Robotics in the School, and may also have some relevance to the Intelligent Environments in CSEE.
