Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
The
diversity of our community
is more than where our staff and students are from. More than 1000 of our staff and students identify as LGBTQ+, more than 1,300 have declared a disability and many members of our community follow a religion or belief.
We recognise the value that diversity brings and so we want to recruit, develop, retain and motivate an increasingly diverse workforce. We also want to attract people who will be good citizens, who will contribute to the life of the University and whose behaviour will have a positive impact on those around them.
Our
Strategy
sets out how we will do this through the delivery of a fair and supportive working environment for all.
The University recognises the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between work and other aspects of life and offers a comprehensive
flexible working policy
including a career break scheme.
We are proud to have a number of Equality and Diversity staff networks including:
Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Staff Forum
,
Essex Women's Network
,
Parent's Network
,
Access Forum
,
Global Forum
,
LGBTQ+ and Allies Community

Lecturer (Emotion and Motivation), Department of Psychology
Job description
Department
The Department of Psychology is a large and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. We occupy purpose-built facilities including state-of-the-art EEG/ERP, eye-tracking, psycho-physiology and computerised testing labs. Adjacent to the building, academics also have access to the facilities housed in the Centre for Brain
Science (CBS), which additionally includes TMS, tDCS, virtual reality, pain and human sexuality testing facilities. We are an outward looking department, internationally known for its excellence in research in a range of areas, with clear links between our different research groups. We offer an excellent education to our students. All our undergraduate courses, and our MSc Psychology conversion course, are accredited by the British Psychological Society. The department is entering an exciting stage of continued planned growth and we are looking for ambitious individuals who will work with colleagues within the department as well as with staff across the Faculty of Science and Health to help enhance our reputation further.
The Department offers a rich and diverse environment and traditionally engages with a range of research across the University including the world-renowned Institute for Social and Economic research (ISER) on outstanding social science research projects. Similarly, synergies between the Department and the Institute for Analytics and Data (IADS) exist with the aim to deliver interdisciplinary research with leading impact. Our links across the faculty have been strengthened through major investment in a new STEM building, which consolidates and integrates our teaching and research infrastructure and will facilitate collaborations across disciplines.
Duties of the Role
You will contribute to excellence in education through designing and delivering effective teaching and learning support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and develop a research agenda which pursues individual and/or collaborative research objectives and proposals of high quality that will as a minimum meet the University's expectations for future Research Exercise Framework (REF) exercises. Additionally, you will generate research income and contribute to the administration and management of the School, and to the local, regional and international profile of the Department.
Appointment will be made as Lecturer.
Skills and qualifications required
We welcome applicants from emotion and motivation psychology. The ideal candidate has expertise in lab-based experimental methodology and is interested in both basic research on emotion/motivation and applied studies in educational psychology.
You will have a relevant doctoral level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate.
You will have confirmed experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and of designing and planning learning activities. You will be able to demonstrate evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes, and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.
The start date for this post will be discussed with candidates at interview.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
Please see the further detail link below for a full job description and person specification which outlines the full duties, skills, qualifications and experience needed for this role plus more information relating to the post. We recommend you read this information carefully before making an application.
