Innovation and Technology Solutions Innovation and Technology Solutions (ITS) provides outstanding IT services and facilities and enables excellence in their use, across the University’s three UK-based campuses, and our international campuses & partner institutions. Our services range from underlying infrastructure technologies, provision of a modern Media Centre, to digital skills training for staff and students. Our vision is of a University where students and staff are provided with the digital tools and processes to enable excellent Education and Research.
We are a community of over 140 staff, working in partnership with our colleagues across the University to deliver innovation and IT services to meet the needs of the University. ITS is organised into six service groups including Commercial Applications, Infrastructure, Software Development, Strategic Projects and Improvement and Technology for People and Place.
The University of Essex is looking for an Information Assurance Manager to join Innovation and Technology Solutions, reporting directly to the Deputy Director. This is a senior role supporting the organisation’s Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO), held by the University’s Registrar and Secretary, and incorporates the University’s Data Protection Office role.
Duties of the RoleThe successful applicant will work as the University’s lead professional on information assurance and data compliance. They will head up development work on information assurance; project management on relevant projects; and provide a methodical risk-based approach to compliance with relevant legislation and regulation. Promoting and supporting best practice in information stewardship, this multi-faceted role spans framework and policy development, service leadership and delivery, and communication and collaboration.

Qualifications and Skills requiredThe successful applicant will possess a degree or equivalent level of qualification or experience and a relevant qualification in data protection or similar related qualification.
In addition, they will have extensive knowledge of the relevant data protection legislation, ICO guidance and practical experience of data protection compliance at a senior leadership level. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling them to explain complex issues to audiences at all levels across the University with tact, diplomacy and confidentiality. They will have extensive experience of delivering engaging training, be able to juggle competing deadlines, have a superb attention to detail and work independently or as part of a team.
