The ISpace is an innovative space composed of a standalone flat utilizing the latest technologies in a variety of areas such as artificial intelligence, computer science, distributed computing, large scale system design, Robotics, Embedded Systems and Internet of Things (IoT).
The successful applicant shall be a bright, enthusiastic team
player, highly motivated exhibiting self-guidance skills in a dynamic learning environment. They will be responsible mainly for the development and maintenance of the Essex Intelligent flat (ISpace). Experience should span both hardware and software disciplines that are commonly associated with intelligent space architectures.
Duties of the Role
The primary duties of the role holder will be to develop and maintain the iSpace for research and teaching activities. In addition, the role duties involve developing IoT facilities within the University and with the University industrial and research partners. This will entail supporting all uses of the ispace laboratory in areas such as teaching, student projects and research. Promoting and supporting the ispace and IoT facilities as a platform for interdisciplinary research of the whole University.
The role holder will assist in the contribution of research work undertaken by the School, actively assisting the School's research portfolio, by providing expert technical advice to other staff and students. They will be expected to develop methods and techniques appropriate to the type of research being conducted and that adds to the intellectual understanding of the field through expert knowledge. Moreover, the postholder will help in making external funding applications which can be returned under the next REF. They will be expected to help occasionally in providing technical support at the hardware and software levels throughout all of the CSEE laboratories.
Skills and qualifications required
An MSc or PhD in Computer Science/Electronic Engineering or related discipline is essential.
The successful candidate will have an analytical mind, be reflective, pragmatic and curative. This role requires an approach which supports a strong technical drive to bring a powerful ethos to all aspects of the CSEE department and the University. A strong logical mind and hands-on approach are essential to succeed in this position.
The candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and must therefore possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a larger team. Due to the nature of the position, excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex technical issues clearly is fundamental.
