Innovation and Technology Solutions, a section of over 100 staff, is organised in six main operational service groups - Infrastructure, Commercial Applications, Software Development, Technology for People and Place, Governance, Architecture and Assurance, and Strategic Projects. As a recently formed professional services department, Innovation and Technology Solutions brings together IT, data, project, and business systems teams.
We are looking to appoint two enthusiastic, proactive and highly organised Software Developers (Web Development) to directly support the work of one of our principal University clients, Communications and External Relations (CER).
CER are responsible for all UK, EU and international student recruitment. In addition to this, they are also responsible for marketing and admissions, widening participation and community activity, corporate marketing and communications, events, fundraising, relations with alumni, and the arts programme on campus.
The two post-holders will be members of the Web Development team within the Software Development group, line managed by the Development Manager (Web Development). The post-holders will be deployed to directly support two areas within Communications and External Relations, one to specifically support their Admissions team and one to support their Web Editing and Digital Media team.
Duties of the RoleThe Software Developers are members of the Web Development team who design, develop and deploy a range of web services, systems and the University's website. The team use modern tools and techniques for issue and work tracking, version control and build/deployment in C#, .NET, and MVC with Sitecore CMS. There is also some integration and work with legacy systems.
The post deployed for Admissions will focus on the improvement of the systems and services that directly support the annual cycle of student admissions activities to gain efficiencies and enable growth in our student recruitment. The focus will be on web self-service through a renewal of our applicant portal and enhancements to our admissions systems. The priorities for work will be arranged by the Director of Admissions or their nominee.
The post deployed for the Web Editing and Digital Media team will focus on developing and maintaining the University's website using Sitecore CMS so as to gain the maximum benefit from its adoption. The post-holder will contribute to the preparation and delivery of the third phase of the University's web presence project. The priorities for work will be arranged by the Director of Communications and the Head of the Web Editing and Digital Media.
Both posts are based at the University's Colchester Campus. Occasional travel to the Southend and Loughton campuses may be required. Both posts will be predominately located in the Communications and External Relations Section in order to be based with the principal client teams.

Qualifications and Skills requiredThese are substantive grade 8 posts but will be considered as a developmental opportunity at grade 7 with support for progression subject to performance.
Applicants at grade 8 will need to possess an honours degree or equivalent-level qualification or experience. In addition, appointment at this grade requires the post-holder to achieve the Sitecore XP Website Development Certification (version 8+ preferred) within 6 months of the appointment.
To be successful you will have experience of coding in Microsoft ASP.NET, .NET, or C# and data driven web applications is essential, preferably with good knowledge and experience of the software lifecycle. You will also be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a range of colleagues.
You will be expected to learn quickly, think analytically and strategically, have excellent organisational skills, and handle multiple priorities, prioritising effectively in order to meet deadlines whilst giving close attention to detail.
