Lecturer in Criminology, Department of Sociology
Job description
Department of Sociology
The Department of Sociology was established in 1964 and is renowned for its research excellence. It is ranked 27 in the QS World Rankings and has been in the top ten for the quality of its research in all of the research assessment exercises since 1986.
We are a large, international and diverse department, currently with 36 permanent full-time
academic staff. All are research active, and they work in a wide array of fields including sociological theory, social and cultural history, philosophy, anthropology and ethnography, quantitative social science, economic sociology, globalisation, international migration, environmental sociology, social psychology, criminology, cultural studies, LGBT studies, and feminism and gender studies. Journals currently edited from the Department include Sexualities and Crime, Media, and Culture.
The department now wishes to appoint one new Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Criminology. The Department is well known for a sociological and critical approach to criminology (as reflected in its successful textbook, Criminology: A Sociological Introduction, 4th edition, 2019). We would be interested in candidates with any research and teaching interests that complement existing strengths, particularly in digital, cyber or security criminology.
Duties of the Role
The post-holder is required to conduct research (individual and/or collaborative) in criminology that is in keeping with REF criteria and to teach (designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support) at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will also supervise undergraduate projects, MA dissertations and PhD research.
In addition, you will be expected to generate external research funding, in collaboration with colleagues and that is appropriate in scale to career stage and subject area norms, and to undertake leadership duties related to research and education appropriate to career stage.
A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will hold a doctoral level research degree in Criminology, Sociology or cognate discipline, or be in the final stages of completion of your studies. You are also required to be a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, or possess the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate.
You will possess evidence of a research agenda and a track record of publications in internationally recognised, reputable journals (and other media of similar standing) appropriate to your career stage and discipline norms. Proven experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to achieve this is also essential. In addition, you will have demonstrable evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.
This is a permanent, full-time post on an ASER (teaching and research) contract that is currently available from August 2019 onward.
We particularly welcome applications from those from ethnic and racial minorities as we seek to increase the department's diversity.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
