The DepartmentThe Department of Language and Linguistics is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Syntax from 1st September 2017.
The RoleThe central responsibility will be for delivering teaching in syntax at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, contributing more widely to other areas of the linguistics curriculum (particularly morphology and semantics), including supervision of student research projects at all levels. You will also be required to demonstrate a commitment to attracting research funding by seeking external research grants commensurate with career level.
Qualifications and Skills requiredThe appointed candidate should demonstrate an ability to formalise analyses in at least one contemporary syntactic theory with a strong commitment to empirically motivated syntactic description, reflecting a sound understanding of both descriptive and formal approaches to syntax. A commitment to developing cross-disciplinary research and projects in the linguistic expertise within the department - sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics or applied linguistics - will be a strong advantage, particularly as this applies to the supervision of undergraduate projects.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Syntax and will have a record of, or potential for, publishing on their specialism in internationally highly-ranked academic journals with a demonstrable commitment to the acquisition of research grants to support the development of their research. The applicant should demonstrate an ability to offer a transformative education to students for which experience in teaching syntax using different approaches at the undergraduate and graduate level is highly desirable.
