UK Data Archive
The UK Data Archive is the lead organisation of the UK Data Service, which provides unified access to regional, national and international social and economic data, support for policy-relevant research and guidance and training for the development of skills in data curation and use.
It is an exciting time to join the Data Archive. We have recently refocused our technical team to enable us to transition into new technologies for future service provision. We are advertising a post for a manager and two supporting roles. Together with our existing team, you will be helping us lead the way, ensuring the UK Data Archive continues to lead the world in providing access to social science and population data.
The UK Data Archive is looking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic full-time open source software engineer in its Application Development and Maintenance team. We acquire, curate and preserve the UK's largest collection of digital social and economic data, making it available to researchers, teachers, and businesses around the world.
Duties of the Role
Your role will be responsible for researching, testing and implementing software and tools aimed at enhancing statistical data and metadata workflow and publishing processes for the UK Data Service.
You will create high quality internal and public documentation, e.g. using Github, and contribute to the UK Data Service training programme on more technical aspects of data handling and management.
Additionally, responsibilities will also include presenting to external audiences on technical aspects of open source work at meetings and conferences as opportunities arise.

Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree or equivalent and will have a background in computing or statistics. Experience with open source software development, release and documentation on Linux and Windows, along with the ability to learn new languages is essential, as is experience in manipulation and handling of structured and statistical data.
Finally, in addition to possessing excellent oral and written communication skills, this role will contribute to the UK Data Service training programme on more technical aspects of data handling and management; so you will need to show confidence in preparing for and speaking to wider audiences.

This is a fixed-term, full-time post until 31 March 2021, due to the nature of the funding. Applications will also be considered from anyone looking to work anything above 30 hours per week. Please indicate on your application the number of hours you are able to work.
