We are looking for an outstanding individual with exceptional coaching experience and leadership skills. Our new Sport Sub-Strategy 2023-28 sets out an ambitious trajectory for competitive sport in support of the University’s mission and strategic aims. We already boast one of the leading university basketball programmes in the U.K., and alongside that our Essex Rebels basketball professional teams are positioned at the pinnacle of a much wider set of basketball activities. This encompasses a large and rapidly growing junior club, schools and community outreach, and award-winning matchday entertainment that draws large crowds from the University and local communities. We not resting on our laurels, however, and our aim is to continue to get bigger and better.
We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced individual who can evidence outstanding leadership qualities and a proven track record when it comes to coaching successful teams, developing and recruiting highly talented players, and leading a successful overall basketball programme. We aim to firmly establish ourselves as the leading HE institution for sport in the region, with basketball as one of our flagship performance sports. To achieve this, we are seeking someone who has the vision, drive, and expertise to take our programme to the next level.
As you would expect, we want someone with all the necessary attributes and experience: a respected and successful basketball coach, who can lead professional sports teams and get the most out of players; someone who can contribute to athlete development and can also provide mentorship and guidance to the basketball coaches and players within the wider basketball programme; someone who understands the landscape of basketball within the UK and can positively represent the University as the public face of the Essex Rebels family, and can provide a positive transformational educational experience to our students and professional athletes.
But we want so much more than these usual attributes.
We are looking for someone with the passion, vision and the insight and understanding to actualise the ways in which the Essex Rebels can impact the wider strategic aims of the University, drawing upon additional resource and expertise from within the University community, enabling us to achieve a competitive edge.
At Essex, we are committed to attracting and supporting student athletes who have the potential and dedication to benefit from, and contribute to, our relentless pursuit of athlete-centred sporting excellence. Our staff have the spirit to be active partners in our students’ learning and university experience; and our students are encouraged to be brave enough to have ideas and generous enough to share them.
Our Head of Basketball Performance will play an important role in realising our vision of the University of Essex as a community where bold change happens. If you share our excitement for the growth, challenges, and opportunities that this important work will bring then please do get in touch. We would be delighted to hear from you.
At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.
To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
