DepartmentOur ambitious Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre will open and transform Square 1 into a dedicated science square with new collaborative learning spaces and interdisciplinary teaching facilities.The GBP 13.2m teaching centre will include a 200-seat IT-rich exploratory learning space to help students from across the Faculty of Science and Health work collaboratively. The building will also include social space and a café, for students, business meetings and for outreach with schools.Duties of the RoleThe successful applicant shall be highly motivated exhibiting self-guidance skills in a dynamic learning environment. They will be responsible for managing the day-to-day running of the STEM computer laboratories and the management and supervision of technical staff as required by Systems Manager. They will be required to install and maintain the computer hardware and software needed to support the leading edge education provided by the Faculty. Providing advanced technical support to academic staff and students, the role holder will be required to work closely with STEM departments and IT Service to ensure lab facilities are run efficiently and smoothly, and problems are resolved in a prompt and timely manner.In addition, the job holder will be required to support and assist seminar presentations, workshops, and STEM events, such industry-facing final year project day demonstrations. Furthermore, the job holder will be required to provide IT support to Department of Mathematical Science, including Linux OS and related applications. Skills and qualifications requiredThe successful candidate will have proven experience of end-user support in a teaching environment and experience of Windows, and Linux operating systems. The candidate must be able to diagnose PC hardware faults and liaise with suppliers to ensure faults are resolved promptly. Experience should span hardware and software installation and configuration. The candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and must therefore possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do.
