Assistant Director of Innovation & Technology (Strategic Projects & Improvement)
Job description
Innovation and Technology Solutions
Innovation and Technology Solutions provides strategic empowerment for the University through the leadership of projects, continuous improvement, and the provision of a digital estate that actively inspire and support the study and work of all students and staff. We aim to provide outstanding services that are customer
focussed and professionally and sustainably delivered. The Innovation and Technology Solutions vision is of a determined drive for improvement of the University as communities of learners, educators, and researchers where all individuals are actively enabled to achieve their best in their digital environment.
Innovation and Technology Solutions, a section of over 100 staff, is organised in six main operational service groups - Infrastructure, Commercial Applications, Software Development, Technology for People and Place, Governance, Architecture and Assurance, and Strategic Projects and Improvement. As a recently formed professional services department, Innovation and Technology Solutions brings together IT, data, project, business analysis, and business systems teams. The post-holder will be a member of the department senior management team and will actively explore the synergies that the new arrangements offer as well as contributing to further reshaping of the department.
This is an exciting time to join the department, whose work is at the heart of the life of our award winning University. The University of Essex is the UK's University of the Year (Times Higher Education Awards 2018). We're part of an elite group of 'dual intensive' universities, gold rated for teaching excellence (Teaching Excellence Framework 2017) and top 25 for research in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019.
With more than 16,000 students and more than 4,000 staff, we also rank 29th in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. The University's strategic projects and improvement activities will be central to delivering the University's ambitious aims outlined in our new Strategic Plan.

Duties of the Role
Duties of the post include strategy, policy and planning - understanding, influencing and translating institutional and customer needs into strategies and plans and leading on the development and monitoring of the University's strategic project portfolio.
Communication and collaboration is a key requirement, leading the overarching advocacy and communication of the purpose, role and benefits of strategic programmes and projects, working with project sponsors, project managers and others to ensure effective communication of change projects, continuous improvement activities and organisational and systems developments to University staff, students and external stakeholders.
The postholder will have a strong focus on project leadership and improvement, ensuring that the staff of the Strategic Projects and Improvement group have clarity of purpose and understand their contribution to the wider context and strategies. They will develop project management, continuous improvement, and business analysis as services that support University aims and objectives and ensure that strategic projects and improvement activities include full lifecycle thinking.
All work will be underpinned by careful consideration for delivery and benefits value, advising on budget requirements, financial planning, setting meaningful service standards, delivering continuous step change service improvements and managing supplier relationships.
The Strategic Projects and Improvement group comprises about 15 staff: project and improvement managers, project support officers, and business analysts. The Group is responsible for the delivery of a range of projects in the University's strategic projects portfolio as well as organising continuous improvement and co-ordinating external review work.
The Strategic Projects and Improvement group has been created by bringing together existing teams in Innovation and Technology Solutions some of which have recently joined from other areas. The group will work closely with groups and teams in Innovation and Technology Solutions as well as in other Professional Services and Academic departments.
A full list of responsibilities and duties can be found within the job pack.
Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will hold an honours degree or equivalent level qualification/ experience. With extensive management experience at senior levels of strategic projects and a motivational leadership style, they will have a track record of successfully building and leading teams to deliver a wide range of strategic projects and improvements.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills will underpin a high attention to detail and the ability to manage complex workloads. With comprehensive organisational, administrative and IT skills, they will be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively to a wide audience at all levels - including the University's senior management - and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a team. They will be experienced in developing and implementing strategic projects in medium to large organisations, preferably in Higher Education.
