The Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS)
IADS was launched in 2014 and moved into a new building in 2016. It is the pan-University Institute which brings together over 100 academics and researchers working in analytics, data science and big data from across the University. The Institute is located in the University's Science and Research Park, the Knowledge Gateway, which is an integral part of the University of Essex Colchester Campus. In the last few years, the University has been awarded over GBP 22 million for novel and multi-disciplinary projects and infrastructure in this area from Research Councils, InnovateUK, industry and other organisations. In 2016, the University was awarded the first UNESCO Chair in Analytics and Data Science, held by Professor Fasli. As a result of the award of the UNESCO Chair, the University is also working with a range of national and international collaborators in the areas of data science and big data, in developing and transitioning countries.
The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) has a strong Genomics and Computational Biology group (http://genomics.essex.ac.uk/). The Genomics and Computational Biology Group has particular strengths in epigenetics and chromatin structure. SBS has a strong interdisciplinary outlook and the Genomics and Computational Biology Group works closely with colleagues in the other three research groups in the School, and other departments in the University. The group has particularly close ties with the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) and the Institute for Social and Economic Research.
Duties of the Role
The Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) seeks to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to start on or after 1 October 2018 to support the Institute's work in analytics, data science and Big Data with a specific focus on genomics and computational biology. The home academic department of the Research Fellow will be the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) and on successful completion of the post and probation period, the Research Fellow will take on a permanent Lecturer post in the School.
This post is fixed-term as a Postdoctoral Fellow at salary grade 8 for three years in the first instance. It is fixed-term for a period of career development in order for the successful candidate to be in a position to be appointed to a permanent Lectureship in the School of Biological Sciences at the end of the Fellowship.
During the period of the Fellowship the post holder will undertake research, teaching in genetics, genomics or computational biology topics as required (to build skills and experience) and administrative duties. This is to provide a good foundation in higher education practice for the Fellow to be able to take a permanent Lectureship that covers the full range of academic duties at a higher level. The successful candidate will become a member of the Genomics and Computational Biology group in the School Biological Sciences and will also collaborate with staff in other research groups.
Skills and Qualifications required

We seek highly motivated, enthusiastic and professional candidates who have excellent knowledge of computer science, interests related to genomics and computational biology, and possess strong software engineering and programming skills. Particular research areas of interest include but are not limited to:
- population genetics including NGS; - epigenomics;- causal inference;- data integration/genome annotation;
The successful candidate will have an excellent publications record and will be able to demonstrate evidence of potential to develop an internationally leading profile in the field. Applicants are required to have a PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Statistics or related discipline or should be close to the completion of a PhD (writing up or under examination).
We strongly encourage applications from women as they are underrepresented in this area.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
