Estates and Campus Services supports the study and work of all students and staff through the provision of outstanding services that are customer focussed and professionally and sustainably delivered.
We are responsible for maintaining and developing the campuses buildings and grounds and the provision of customer led services such as campus security, student accommodation, catering, conferencing, nursery provision and sport. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our growing Sustainability team at the University of Essex in the post of Sustainability (Environment and Recycling) Manager.
This is a substantive grade 9 post but will be considered as a developmental opportunity at grade 8 with support for progression subject to performance. Applicants with less than extensive working experience in the areas specified are encouraged to apply as training and development will be provided subject to overall aptitude and assessed technical capability.
Duties of the Role
The Sustainability (Environment and Recycling) Manager is a key senior role within the Sustainability team developing sustainability at the University. You will be fundamental in leading the University's sustainability and recycling work, along with the day to day management of the University's Sustainability sub-strategy, sustainability engagement at the University and long term recycling plan for all three University campuses.
You will:
* Provide strategic, operational and professional leadership for the sustainability function.
* Oversee and deliver an increase in sustainability in all aspects of the University's curriculum.
* Deliver sustainability engagement at the University through strong relationships, collaboration and communication with academic faculties, professional services and the Students' Union.
* Lead the development and implementation of the University's various sustainability policies and strategies including procurement, food, waste and recycling along with related action plans.
Appointments at Grade 9 will be expected to take a lead in the duties; appointments at Grade 8 will work more closely with colleagues and under the supervision of the Head of Sustainability and Grounds. A full list of duties can be found within the jobpack attached.
Skills and Qualifications required
The role will require a forward thinking individual with a passion for delivering improvements with a sound understanding of environmental issues. You should be a strong planner, strategic thinker, be confident to challenge the status que and have a natural desire to be the best and therefore drive the environmental function of the University to be the best amongst its peers.
The successful candidate will hold a BSc (in Sustainability for Grade 9) or equivalent and have considerable experience (some for Grade 8 developmental level) creating and implementing strategies and sub-strategies, as well as experience and understanding of recycling infrastructure and initiatives.
