Lecturer, Department of Psychology
Job description
Department
The Department of Psychology is a large and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. We occupy purpose-built facilities including state-of-the-art EEG/ERP, eye-tracking, psycho-physiology and computerised testing labs. Adjacent to the building, academics also have access to the facilities housed in the Centre for Brain
Science (CBS), which additionally includes TMS, tDCS, virtual reality, pain and human sexuality testing facilities. We are an outward looking department, internationally known for its excellence in research in a range of areas, with clear links between our different research groups. We offer an excellent education to our students. All our undergraduate courses, and our MSc Psychology conversion course, are accredited by the British Psychological Society. The department is entering an exciting stage of continued planned growth and we are looking for ambitious individuals who will work with colleagues within the department as well as with staff across the Faculty of Science and Health to help enhance our reputation further.
The Department offers a rich and diverse environment and traditionally engages with a range of research across the University: we have strong links with the Department of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) who are known for their expertise in brain-computer interface, human-robot interactions, and speech and natural language processing work, amongst other core areas. In addition, staff collaborate with experts from the world-renowned Institute for Social and Economic research (ISER) on outstanding social science research projects. Similarly, synergies between the Department and the Institute for Analytics and Data (IADS) exist with the aim to deliver interdisciplinary research with leading impact. Our links across the faculty have been strengthened through major investment in a new STEM building, which consolidates and integrates our teaching and research infrastructure and will facilitate collaborations across disciplines. We welcome applicants from all fields of psychology, but have a particular interest in building on our expertise in language, and in developing our work in clinical psychology, in conjunction with our School for Health and Social Care.
Duties of the Role
The successful candidate will design, plan and deliver learning, taking into account department planning and priorities. They will be expected to produce research outputs for publication at acceptable levels of volume and excellence and to contribute to the process of securing external research income. They will play an active and constructive role in the Department beyond their own research and education duties.
Appointment will be made as Lecturer.
Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will have a relevant doctoral level research degree in Psychology or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience or practice, or to be close to completion of PhD. They must also have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level.
Candidates will have proven experience in teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate levels or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in Higher Education and evidence of a clear publication plan for future REF programmes. The ability to engage in impact, knowledge exchange and outreach activities and have a clear understanding of how students learn both generally and within your subject area is essential as are strong communication skills.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
