Mondaq EIRA Student Placement, Department of Mathematical Sciences
Job description
EIRA
EIRA supports innovation and productivity in the East of England by providing businesses with access to academic expertise, across seven different universities and colleges in the eastern region. This includes consultancy and collaborative research, and funding. Further information is available at
http://www.eira.ac.uk
The Project
Mondaq Ltd
is a leading independent online publisher, providing a content marketing platform to over 800 international law firms, allowing them to directly connect their expertise with in-house lawyer's and c-suite executives. We host and distribute the most up-to-date articles and video content on legal, accountancy, regulatory and compliance issues from the world's leading professional advisors and provide a whole range of analytics and benchmarking tools to enable clients to build relationships with Mondaq's users.
Duties of the role
You will work together with our data scientist and software engineers on projects that would help deliver innovative solutions to challenging problems. One of the main projects that you will be working on is to analyse user engagement with our published content to better understand why some content tends to perform better than the other - is it due to timing, catchy titles, topics popularity or possibly how the content is written. The main part of this project would be to identify characteristics of an article (or video) that result in higher or lower user engagement, so creative problem solving and knowledge of Natural Language Processing/Text Mining would be essential.
This post is for a fixed term of max 11 months (full-time and part-time options available) and is based at the Mondaq offices at Innovation Centre (Colchester Campus). It is a partnership project with the University of Essex and offers the fantastic opportunity of supervision from Berthold Lausen at the University of Essex and Elena Kulinskaya at the University of East Anglia.
Skills and qualifications required
Our ideal candidate is someone who has (or is working towards to) a BSc, MSc or PhD in a quantitative field like Data Science, Statistics or Mathematics (though not limited to), has experience in Natural Language Processing and is seeking to work on challenging and highly impactful projects within a small, innovative team.
You will have intermediate/strong analytical scripting and data visualisation skills and knowledge of Natural Language Processing and Text Mining. The successful candidate will be capable of working within a team and independently, taking ownership of projects and working accurately to deadlines.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
Please see the further detail link below for a full job description and person specification which outlines the full duties, skills, qualifications and experience needed for this role plus more information relating to the post. We recommend you read this information carefully before making an application.
