Appointment will be made as Senior Research Officer.Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral researcher to work on a 12-month research project examining the role of sensory integration in Virtual Reality (VR). The work focuses on how presence and immersion in the virtual world relate to how the seen and felt body movements are being combined by the human sensory system.The project investigators are Dr Loes van Dam and Prof Paul Hibbard (University of Essex, Colchester, UK) in collaboration with Dr Peter Scarfe (University of Reading, UK) and Oculus VR. The project is funded by Oculus VR.Based in the Department of Psychology at the University of Essex (Colchester, UK), the post-doctoral researcher will be primarily responsible for programming and conducting experimental studies, assessing the interaction between sensorimotor processing and the level of immersion in the virtual world. Duties of the post include: the day to day responsibility for the implementation of research duties, the design and programming of the computer-controlled experimental tasks and virtual environments; the recruitment of participants; the collection of data and the management and analysis of quantitative data. The post holder will also participate in the preparation of research outputs and will contribute to the collaborative discussions and the dissemination of findings from the project.Applicants must have completed a PhD in Cognitive Science, Computer Science or a related discipline. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in programming interactive computer games and/or virtual reality environments, experience in designing and conducting psychophysical experiments, involvement in a multi-institutional research group and a willingness to travel to collaborative meetings and conferences.It is expected that the successful applicant be available to start work no later than 1st of July 2017.
