THE PROJECT

The University of Essex in partnership with Emergency Lighting Products Ltd offers an exciting opportunity to a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to design and implement a new generation control board into a range of emergency lighting products, using the latest developments in IoT, network security, and wireless communications technologies. This post is fixed term for 24 months and is based at Emergency Lighting Products offices in Basildon, Essex.   

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties of the post will include:

• Devising a method to provide intelligent communication with lighting products using Dali and applying to Near field comms standards.
• Investigating methods for low-power or power scavenging operation of wireless protocols particularly beamcasting.
• Designing a prototype system that interfaces between a user-interface and lighting products while ensuring secure operation within the existing Dali protocol.
• Pre-product development, documentation and testing with particular emphasis on EMC compliance and user safety.
• Communicating technical concepts to stakeholders, including potential clients.
• Carry out lab tests and field trials and report/act on findings.
• Ability to co-author articles with the academic team.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

The post holder must have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Network Engineering, Telecommunications or a related discipline
• Familiarity with local area and IoT communication systems such as Ethernet, Bluetoothand ideally building automation protocols such as DALI
• Experience in designing and programming microprocessor embedded systems
• Experience with wireless communication systems
• Experience with programming embedded systems in C
• Ability to communicate highly technical information to non-technical colleagues and clients
• Ability to assess current state-of-the-art in wireless communication systems and networking and make recommendations on how to develop efficient communications systems
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
