The NIHR Research Design ServiceThe NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) East of England (EoE) is part of a national service that supports researchers in turning innovative research ideas into strong research proposals in order to attract funding. It is an active and dynamic network of five Universities and NHS trusts across the East of England offering research advice and support across the region. The service is particularly focused on offering support for applied health and social care research, with an emphasis on supporting researchers applying for NIHR funding. The units that contribute to the RDS EoE are based in the Universities of East Anglia, Cambridge, Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and four NHS Trusts. The Role and DutiesThis is a substantive academic position that is open to Senior Lecturer/Reader/Professorial levels. The post includes the role of Director of the NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) East of England.The Director is responsible for:* Delivery of the RDS EoE contract including management of the GBP 5 million budget and providing annual reports to the Department of Health and Social Care.* Development and leadership of regional strategy to ensure successful delivery of contract* Building and maintaining partnerships with regional organisations involved in research, e.g. NIHR regional organisations; health and social care agencies; Universities; service user organisations.* Working with other regional Directors and playing a national role to develop the RDS as a national service.* Providing line management to the public involvement lead, the central co-ordinator and the RDS Advisers based at EssexFor applicants at Senior Lecturer or Reader level you will engage in curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision at both an individual and a strategic level; and provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the Department.At the above levels you will also engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity that is in keeping with REF criteria; and generate external research income appropriate in scale to career stage and subject area norms.For applicants at Professor level you will build up a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning, as part of a wider commitment to academic practice; and pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, in keeping with the REF criteria. The RDS Director post is a 0.4fte (14.4 hours) until 30 September 2023. The post is based at based at the Colchester campus of the University of Essex, but has a regional remit. The preference is for the post-holder to be based at the Colchester Campus University of Essex; however secondment arrangements for the Director role will be considered. Qualifications and Skills requiredThis post is not restricted to a particular substantive research area or specialism. However the school's research strategy is to build upon existing strengths in health and social care research. The successful candidate will have suitable experience and expertise in the area of health services research or social care research and will be able to demonstrate the commensurability of that expertise with existing research in the school. All applicants should hold a relevant doctoral-level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice, and have a track record of publications and grants in health services research and social care research.They must have experience of research leadership and knowledge of NIHR and the applied health and social care research landscape in England. Planning and organisational skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders are key attributes that are required. Applicants at the Senior Lecturer or Reader level will be required to provide evidence of an established and internationally recognised research profile, with a well-developed future research agenda; a sustained record of effectiveness in education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and a strong track record of published academic output at international levels of recognition with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.Applicants at the Professor level will be required to demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels appropriate to the discipline; a strong, sustained record of academic publication at international or world-leading levels of recognition in political science, with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes; and an established record of success in securing and managing substantial research grants (appropriate to the discipline).At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do.
