Department of SociologyWe are in the Top 25 Sociology Departments in the world and top-rated in the UK for the quality of our research. We embed our innovative and sometimes controversial research into both our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, linking theory with evidence.
The Department is expanding but there are currently around 33 academic staff members and 2 Research Officers. The Department has nearly 500 undergraduate students, just over 80 postgraduate taught students and around 70 postgraduate research students. The Department has an active Sociology Society run by students for students and a vibrant weekly seminar series during term time that is open to both staff and students.
Due to maternity leave an opportunity has arisen within the Department of Sociology for a full-time Department Manager on a fixed-term basis between the 2nd January 2018 and the 21st December 2018.
The Role and DutiesThe Department Manager provides leadership for the Professional Services Team in their Department so that it is able to make a full contribution to delivering the excellence in education and research that is the University's purpose. The Department Manager is accountable to the Head of Department and works very closely with the Head, and as required with the Faculty Manager, Faculty Support Team and members of Central Professional Services to discharge their responsibilities.
The role is varied and wide ranging with duties including contributing to the development and successful operation of the Departmental Strategic Leadership Team; managing the quality assurance processes of the Department; and providing support for the financial and human resource management within the Department.
Qualifications and Skills requiredThe successful candidate will hold a good first degree or an equivalent qualification and/or experience.
The successful candidate will have strong leadership, financial management, organisational and administrative skills and have excellent IT skills. Flexibility, excellent interpersonal and communication skills combined with the ability to deal effectively with competing priorities and deadlines are also essential for this post.
As this is a secondment for a fixed-term period until December 2017, it carries an expectation that the post-holder will return to their current post at the end of this time. We would recommend you discuss your application for this secondment with your line manager prior to making an application. Your Department/ Section will need to consider cover arrangements for your absence before a decision can be reached as to the possibility of your release from your current post.
