Academic SectionAn employability professional is sought for the role of Faculty Employability Officer (FEO) at our Colchester Campus to join our award winning Employability and Careers Centre (E&CC).
Working closely with academics and professional services colleagues, the Employability and Careers Centre is at the forefront of supporting students in becoming ready for the graduate labour market. We take a student centred-approach, putting the needs of the individual first. Our services are very diverse ranging from enterprise, mentoring, work experience, internships, careers information, advice and guidance, career development learning and employability awards.
The Student Life Directorate is part of the Academic Section and encompasses the Employability and Careers, Student Engagement, Talent Development and the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity services. We are committed to innovation and continuous enhancement within our services; and to working collaboratively across all areas of the University, and beyond, for the benefit of our students.
The Academic Section is part of the University's Professional Services and is headed by the Academic Registrar. The Section is responsible for managing all aspects of student and academic administration and plays a central role in delivering the University's commitment to excellence in education across the institution.
Duties of the RoleThe purpose of this post is to contribute to providing a transformative student experience, nurturing the qualities of the Essex Graduate and driving up DLHE outcomes to achieve the University's KPI of being in the top 25 of UK institutions and each subject to be in the top 20% for employability by 2019 as part of a Faculty Employability Team and through contributing to activities elsewhere in the E&CC.
Adapting your pattern of work to meet Faculty needs and priorities, you will work across the spectrum of employability activities: motivating students to engage with activities, coaching individuals, delivering careers workshops/lectures, engaging with employers and organising daytime and evening events, as part of this highly varied and diverse role. Faculty priorities which this role will support include student engagement, advice and development of employability skills for placement students undertaking work-based learning as part of their studies.
Qualifications and Skills requiredApplicants are required to hold a good honours degree or equivalent level qualification. Ideally you should have a relevant professional qualification related to careers/employability/coaching, though this is not an essential criterion for appointment to this post.
Your previous experience will have equipped you with insight into employability, recruitment and student issues. You should have experience of delivering one-to-one careers advice and information to undergraduate students in a Higher Education Institution and experience of working with graduate employers either in an internal recruitment function, or as an external recruitment agent.
Ideally you will have worked on internships or work based/related learning. You will have an innovative, engaging and effective professional approach. You will be someone who thrives on change and seeks new challenges, a self-starter who can find fresh ways to engage with students, while ensuring your activities are effectively coordinated with your colleagues.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
