Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre StudiesThe Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies was one of the foundational departments in the University of Essex and is an exciting, interdisciplinary Department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other. Our Multimedia Journalism BA course, which launched in 2015, is accredited by both the National Council for the Training of Journalists and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council. The programme encourages and enables students to develop a sophisticated conceptual model of the news media industry and its place in society alongside advanced practical skills. Therefore recent, senior experience of practice within the profession of Journalism is required.Duties of the RoleThe successful candidate will be expected to design, plan and deliver research-led modules, as well as to teach on existing modules and to lead students towards success in NCTJ and BJTC examinations and News Days. The post holder will contribute to the development of the postgraduate taught and research environment in Journalism and you will be expected to contribute to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.A willingness and desire to contribute to the wider, multi-disciplinary Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies - via an interest and/or expertise in Creative Writing, Film, Literature or Drama - would be welcomed.In addition, you will supervise student projects, fieldwork and placements, supervise any postgraduate taught students as appropriate, and contribute to the general administrative duties in the Department. A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the job pack.Skills and qualifications requiredThe successful candidate will have a relevant doctoral level research degree in a subject related to Journalism or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD and will have fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this. You will also hold a National Council for Training of Journalists (NCTJ) accreditation or equivalent. You will have proven experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support, along with a sustained engagement in continuing professional development in relevant subjects/disciplines and their pedagogies. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are essential for this post, along with comprehensive knowledge and high-level experience of the profession of Journalism and the modern Journalism industry, with a particular emphasis on the practical skills associated with a modern multimedia newsroom.
