The School is run over 2 campuses, based at Southend and Colchester. (Speech and Language Therapy programmes are based in Colchester) Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses. In April 2017 we were awarded a silver Athena SWAN award which recognises the commitment the School has toward equality and development of an inclusive culture, promoting dignity and respect.
Duties of the Role
The School of Health and Social Care is seeking to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Speech & Language Therapy. We would particularly welcome applications from individuals that are keen to develop research, drawing from, and building upon, existing research expertise within the school and applicant's own research profile.
The post also includes a significant contribution to our Speech and Language Therapy courses at Colchester campus (these are run at UG and PG level). It is expected that you would assist the Subject Lead, providing practical support to the team and undertake programme/ module leadership and teaching, and assessment duties.
For the ASE Grade 8 role, duties will include engaging effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the Department, and developing a broad understanding of how such activities support student learning.
For the ASER Grade 9 role candidates are expected to develop a research agenda which pursues individual and/or collaborative research objectives and proposals of high quality that will as a minimum meet the University's expectations for future Research Framework (REF) exercises as well as to contribute to excellence in education by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (e.g. curriculum development and review, assessment and feedback, research supervision etc.) as agreed with the Dean of School/ Head of Group for Nursing and Health Studies.
Due to the nature of the work, this appointment is subject to a criminal record check, known as a Disclosure.
Appointment will be made as Lecturer.
Skills and qualifications required
This role will require management, administration, supervision, and support for staff alongside, assessment and teaching of students on our existing modules, and generally enhancing our research-led teaching in Speech & Language Therapy. We have a high reputation for our innovative educational delivery of Speech & Language Therapy programmes (in the top 15 in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction, 100% Employability, ranked gold in 2017 for the Teaching Excellence Framework and named University of the Year 2018). We aim for excellence in research as well as in education and are looking for candidates who can contribute to both.
For the ASE Grade 8 role we would expect the candidate to hold a relevant post graduate degree or be close to completion or equivalent professional experience or practice.
For the ASER Grade 9 role candidates would be expected to be actively engaged in research, have a relevant doctoral level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD and evidence a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes.
For both the ASE Grade 8 role and ASER Grade 9 role, candidates should have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate plus HCPC registration as a Speech & Language Therapist, or an equivalent EU/International registration. Additionally, it is essential that candidates also have a commitment to uphold the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and to exhibit professional behaviours and attitudes in keeping with the HCPC and NHS values.
Please note if applying for the Grade 8 ASE Lecturer role, you will not need to complete the research statement (d) or the three year plan (e) for generating funding.
We particularly welcome applications from those who identify as male or non-binary and those from an ethnic minority as they are under-represented in the School of Health & Social Care
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
