Senior Research Officer – The Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project
Job description
School of Law
Ranked 47th in the law subject section in the 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, at Essex Law School we take excellence in research and excellence in education equally seriously. New academic staff are supported to become fellows of the Higher Education Authority and we are a top 20 UK law school for research (REF2014). We champion
research-led education, where teaching is informed by research and students develop research skills.
Duties of the Role
The University of Essex is seeking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Research Officer to work on the Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project.
The Project, currently in its third year, is a GBP 6 million Economic and Social Research Council and University of Essex-funded project that brings together over 30 researchers from numerous disciplines. This interdisciplinary team is working on academic research aimed at generating cutting edge policy and practical developments at the national and international levels, focusing specifically on achieving impact within the United Nations space.
The appointee will work principally with Professor Sheldon Leader, conducting research on the role of businesses in the era of big data and associated human rights issues. Current studies include examining the human rights implications of businesses' collection and use of data, sharing of data with governments and online content regulation.
Responsibilities will involve undertaking desk-based research and qualitative interviews, assisting in tracking developments and identifying key stakeholders working on the challenges and opportunities for human rights and contributing to the dissemination of research findings to a range of stakeholders. You will also have involvement with producing a range of authored outputs in a variety of formats.
Skills and Qualifications required
The successful candidate will hold a degree in law or a related discipline, along with holding a postgraduate qualification in a field relevant to human rights and you will ideally have a PhD involving human rights or equivalent research experience. The ability to undertake qualitative research of the highest standard, to write work of publishable quality, to disseminate research findings to a range of stakeholder and expert communities, and excellent organisational, administrative and interpersonal skills are also essential.
This post is offered on a fixed term contract until the end of the Project in September 2020. The post is based at our Colchester Campus with travel required within and beyond the UK.
Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with a strong interest in the links between business and human rights. While candidates who have familiarity with the range of issues arising from business activities linked with data collection, use etc. are very welcome, knowledge of the links between business and human rights is a priority.
At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
