The Department of Language and Linguistics is seeking to appoint a 2-year fixed term full-time Lecturer in Linguistics (Syntax) to cover a 2-year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship awarded to Prof Louisa Sadler. The appointed candidate will be responsible for delivering teaching in syntax and semantics at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, will contribute more widely to core areas of the linguistics curriculum, and will be expected to undertake supervision of both BA and MA projects and contribute administratively to the Department. They will need to demonstrate high-quality research in syntax, semantics and/or grammatical description.
The appointed candidate must be able to teach two graduate level modules in Syntactic Theory and one graduate level module in Formal Semantics. Teaching in syntax and semantics or a related field will also be expected at undergraduate level. The candidate should have a good understanding of both descriptive and formal approaches to syntax and contemporary semantics. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in syntax, semantics, grammatical description or a related specialism and will demonstrate evidence of the ability to publish high quality research in an appropriate area, and have future plans for publication. The applicant should demonstrate an ability to offer a transformative education to students. Experience in teaching syntax at the undergraduate and graduate level is highly desirable, as well as working with corpus data and exploiting tools such as sketch engine.
The proposed start date is 1st September 2017.
