About The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences (SRES)
The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences (SRES) was established in 2017 to provide contemporary training in sport and exercise science, sports performance and coaching, physiotherapy and sports therapy. We offer undergraduate and Masters degree programmes, Continuing Professional Development pathways, and postgraduate research opportunities embedding staff expertise in research and professional practice skills within the curriculum. SRES has an outstanding reputation for both education and research. We were ranked in the top 25 for Sports Science in the Times Good University Guide 2023, and 23rd in the UK for research power in sport and exercise sciences (Times Higher Education research power measure, REF 2021).
About the Research Fellowship
The Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing seeks to appoint a full-time Research Fellow to start March 2023, or soon thereafter. This fellowship will support the Institute’s work in the field of healthy lifestyle behaviours and physical activity.
This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious researcher to contribute to the development of a new research line and strengthen collaboration between IPHW and SRES at the University of Essex as well as to build their pedagogical skills to successfully transition to a lectureship position.
We wish to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Fellow, on a pathway to permanency, to undertake world class research and development work as well as open up and develop new research activities in the field of healthy, active lifestyle behaviours (i.e., physical activity) to benefit physical, psychological and social health. While we are looking to a broad range of expertise, we are particularly interested to consider applications from candidates with a strong research, and ideally teaching, track record in one of the following areas related to physical activity and wellbeing: health analytics, modelling and data mining including machine learning, health data science, health policies, health systems, or health economics.
The ideal candidate will have a critical role in developing outstanding and internationally leading research in one of these fields.
The fellow will work alongside a cohort of fellows working at the IPHW to enhance research through collaboration and partnership. We expect the methodological focus to be discipline or domain relevant.
The successful candidate will have a publications record appropriate for their experience and will be able to demonstrate evidence of potential to develop an internationally leading profile in the field. Applicants are required to have a PhD in a relevant discipline or should be close to the completion of a PhD (writing up or under examination).
The post is fixed term as a Research Fellow at salary grade 8 for three years in the first instance. It is fixed-term for a period of career development in order for the successful candidate to be in a position to be appointed to a permanent Lectureship (at grade 9) in the relevant substantive academic Department or School at the University of Essex at the end of the Fellowship.
During the period of the Fellowship, the post holder will undertake research, teaching (to build skills and experience) and administrative duties. This is to ensure a good foundation in higher education practice for the Fellow to be able to take a permanent Lectureship that covers the full range of academic duties at a higher level.
