Estates and Campus ServicesThe Estates Section is responsible for the management and servicing of the University estate including all building and grounds maintenance, cleaning of non student accommodation buildings, security, post services, central purchasing and strategic capital planning. The section has a mix of professional, skilled and semi-skilled staff and seeks to provide a highly professional, cost effective service.Duties of the RoleWe are looking for a Mechanical Supervisor to organise the mechanical trades and liaise with other trades across the University to carry out; on-site maintenance, repair and upgrade of mechanical installations and inspection and testing of complex mechanical systems associated with building services in all of the premises owned and operated by the University of Essex, in accordance with the University of Essex Safe working on Mechanical Systems policy. The post holder will be expected to diagnose and repair faults in complicated mechanical installations, plant and equipment and will undertake inspection and testing in line with British Standards.You will also be expected to plan install of new plant, equipment and services, and will be responsible for managing the full planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) programme of works. Additionally, the post holder will be working to manuals, instructions, drawings and specifications without direct supervision.A full list of duties can be found within the jobpack.Skills and Qualifications requiredThe successful candidate will have completed a recognised qualification or training, and will hold an NVQ level 3 or City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Installing and Commissioning Mechanical Systems and Equipment or related industry.It is essential that the successful candidate is able to demonstrate experience in the maintenance of commercial/industrial and domestic mechanical supplies, and has proven experience working as a Supervisor of Chargehand with responsibility of line managing staff. The ability to communicate effectively, and willingness to learn new methods of working, showing flexibility where required are essential for this post.Hours of work are a nominal 36 hours per week, to be worked over a shift system of 7am - 7pm. Weekend working is expected to be 1 weekend in 6 but flexibility is required.
